Childish Gambino - Centipede

New song from Actor/Comedian/Rapper/OG Donald Glover (A.K.A. Childish Gambio) called
Centipede. It's 7 minutes due to a elongated intro thing, but its vintage gambino all in all, which is hard not to like.

Macklemore - The Remixes

Hey crew, got some cool remixes of some Macklemore songs. He has developed a very personal style of lyricism as well discussing modern problems such as gay rights and substance abuse. Major Lazer released a couple remixes of Can't Hold Us which inspired me to find a few more Macklemore mixes and them together for you. Enjoy~

Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap

Amazing new mixtape out from Chicago native Chance the Rapper called ACID RAP. He started his rap career after being suspended from highschool for a week by teachers who mocked his musical hopes, which inspired him to release his 2012 mixtape 10 DAY (another great listen). With 10 DAY's success he collaborated with names like Nate Fox and Childish Gambio to release this new fantastic 13 song release.

Chance the Rapper is reminiscent of Kendrick in his poetic and diverse lyricism and uses gospel and blues infused production. His songs range in topic from comedic ones like his grandmother not wanting to hug him due to his smoke-saturated clothes to gun violence in his home neighbourhood of Englewood, South Chicago.

You can listen here
or download the entire mixtape here courtesy of  Datpiff.com

Jurassic 5 - The Remixes

Jurassic 5 was a pioneering group in Hip-Hop originating from LA. They are definitely one of my favourite rap groups of all time. Releasing the bulk of their material in the early 2000's, they were able to maintain many of the aspects which defined the golden age of rap in the 90's. J5 is a must for any Hip-Hop music lover. There have also been a number of awesome J5 remixes in the last few years, some of which I have gathered in the set above. There are some great mashups with other genres and house bangers in this set, I hope they bring you some musical joy in your day!

Atmosphere - Strictly Leakage

Stricktly Leakage is an album that doesn't exist. You won't find it in most record stores and most fans of Atmosphere don't even know it. These 13 songs were released as a free download in 2007 and never gained much attention. I found it early this year in the dustiest back corner of Rhymesayers catalogues. It has quickly become one of my favourite collection of Hip-Hop tracks yet.

There are few rap albums I've listened to that compare to the way Strictly Leakage flows from song to song. Every song plays right into the next both lyrically and instrumentally. Despite being an unoffical album, I think that Strictly Leakage is one of the groups most unified releases.

The early tracks of the album use some of my favorite brass samples I've heard in Hip-Hop. The Instrumentals are diverse yet seem to be linked through the album's use of different type of brass instruments. This results in a strong, upbeat and head-bopping accompaniment to lead emcee Slug. Despite Slug being one of my favourite rappers, the often overlooked Ant and other members of the crew are essential to the groups sound.

Slug is the centrepiece of the group and has a strong performance on this album. Slug's lyrics have  grown with him over his long career. His earlier releases focusing on younger problems like his problems with alcohol and women. By 2007 and Strictly Leakage, the content of Slug's lyrics shifted to be more personal and even philosophical. The Things That Hate Us and Little Math You are songs with lyrics that speak to more that conventional rap topics. Strictly Leakage is even comical, with songs like Domestic Dog, which recount Slug's attempt to pick up women in the grocery store.

Strictly Leakage is a complete album, that showcases the diverse talents of each member in the group while somehow remaining the most complete album yet. Its an upbeat 40 minutes of triumphant horn sections, solid processions and thought-provoking lyrics. I cannot wait for Atmosphere's 2013 release.

Rhymesayers Entertainment

This is a new segment I'm going to try, where I am going to tell you guys about different record labels that have cool new artists to check out. I did a post on Diplo's label MAD DECENT a while ago, which inspired this. I think record labels are a fantastic way of finding new music. That said, today I want to show you guys RHYMESAYERS Entertainment. This label was started by Slug and Ant (a.k.a. Atmosphere), Musap and Siddiq in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Atmosphere is one of my favourite rap artists, and they have released the majority of their material on RHYMESAYERS for a start. Then add other established rap names like MF DOOM and AESOP ROCK and you have a solid foundation for a label. As a group, these artists have put out some of my favourite rap in the post 90's era. Here's a sampling of some RHYMESAYERS tracks!

Mina Knock

http://www.fresh-grind.com/
Hey guys,

This weekend (while procrastinating my numerous essays) I spent plenty of time looking up new music! One of the highlights was finding a young LA Hip-hop artists called MINA KNOCK. He is relatively new on the scene, with only one EP and another half dozen or so songs on his soundcloud, but he has developed his own unique style of rapping and producing. Building on both old and new school conceptions of Hip-hop, Knock describes his style as:

To me hip-hop, is a dying brand… Something I’m trying to revive. I don’t want to bring the old school back but I don’t want to join the new school either. I’ve got my own style, I got my own team and we got our own swag. Im sure you can hear a little bit of all the greats in the shit I’m creating. I’m here to make music that’s relevant, and the Hip-Hop that I’m making is art.”

He has a wonderfully refreshing flow to his raps coupled with melodic production. His lyrics feel much more genuine and intelligent that a lot of the (often hilarious) new rap out there today. His song I NEED YOU is unquestionably my favourite, combining a beautiful female vocal chorus with honestly desperate verses pleading with the girl he loves but can never have (who hasen't been there right?). Check out his THE DOOR MUST BE CLOSED AT ALL TIMES EP as well, available for free DL!

Wu Tang Vs Beatles - Run

http://thekoalition.com/2010/02/free-download-wu-tang-vs-the-beatles/
Hello everybody, hope you had an awesome weekend. Got an amazing combination for yea today, WU-TANG CLAN and the Beatles. This album came out a few years ago, but I found it a few months ago. There are few things more awesome than the Beatles or Wu-Tang on their own, but producer TOM CARUANA was able to    bring these two very different musical experiences together into a very cool final piece. The album uses basic BEATLES melodies and tunes and the backing for a eclectic choice of WU-TANG songs. The song RUN utilizes samples from I AM THE WALRUS, from the 1967 album THE MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. The song is a great pump up song about running from the cops (something I, as a small white kid knows A LOT about!!).

"So I run through the alley, when I come through the block
Runnin' so fast, you would think I'm chasin' the cops
Right in broad daylight, in the middle of winter
I can't go to jail, my mother cookin' chicken for dinner, damn!"

The album is very listenable, but then again how couldn't it be with the combination of two of the biggest names in their respective genres?!?

Atmosphere

Another personal favourite to check out, the Minnesota hip-hop group, ATMOSPHERE. These guys formed in 1989 as a collaboration between rapper SLUG and produce ANT. Duo actually started with inverse roles, but SLUG developed into the central emcee in the group. SLUG has had a really diverse song writing repertoire over the last decade. The early atmosphere albums were more conventional in composition, though the lyrics were very unique, as SLUG created a character called Lucy, which he used mainly as a embodiment of his own alcohol issues. The song FUCK YOU LUCY off of the 2002 record GOD LOVES UGLY, is an incredibly intimate look into SLUG's individual struggle with alcohol and trying to make it clean.

"Fuck you Lucy, for leaving me. Fuck you Lucy for not needing me. I wanna say fuck you. Because I still love you. No, I'm OK. And I don't know what to do"

Atmosphere's recent albums have expanded their subject matter into some awesome ways. There are multiple songs which attempt to empathize with the many marginalized, overworked and struggling people in America. THE BEST DAY off of their 2010 EP TO ALL MY FRIENDS, BLOOD MAKES THE BLAD HOLY is a great example of the connection SLUG is able to make with listeners. He has a way of making you feel like he gets exactly what your going though, and he's the supportive best friend who's there to get you through it.

"Every day can't be the best day. Do what you can right now, don;t hesitate. That's why we try make love and get paid. Take the bad with the good, now let's play"

Slug recently announced the group is working on a new album, hopefully coming out this year. I'll post some songs below and keep an eye out for a new album!

Nas - Illmatic

http://www.thesuitedelight.com/2012/08/nas-illmatic-1994.html
One thing I want to do with this blog is include some classics. Now anyone who knows hip hops knows the 1994 Nas album ILLMATIC but for those who don't, you should. It was reissued this past December, which brought it back into my regular circulation. Illmatic captures the time and context of its creation better than most albums I've ever heard. Nas was raised in Queens, New York in the biggest public housing complex in North America. Illmatic was his debute album, written while he was in the mists of the problems of a young black man in the projects (Comin' out of Queensbridge). Nas raps about that problems facing him in this chaotic and seemingly miserable setting. But despite the hardness of Nas' roots, ILLMATIC conveys an optimism for the future, which you can clearly hear on THE WORLD IS YOURS. Nas' exceptional lyrical content didn't stop him from working with some of the smoothest beats to grace hip hop. This album exemplifies Golden Age hip hop and one of the best rap albums of all time. If you don't know this album, do yourself a favour and get it immediately. For those familiar with ILLMATIC, do YOURSELF a favour and listen to it again, trust me you wont regret 40 minutes of sheer bliss.

Here's a link to my favourite song on the album, LIFES A BITCH and a cool re-edit by VANILLA
